"Cinematography is not really just the beauty of an image shot or the dynamic nature of a shot. It boils down to two things: what does the shot say and how does it make you feel."
-Jonathan Burdett
My name is Frank Cerami. People ask, after being in the adverting business, why I love shooting weddings and events. First a little background:
I spent the early part of my career working full time in the Philadelphia radio business. I was a broadcaster, music director, program director, research director, and creative copy writer for radio advertising.
In 1995, I started my own Philadelphia-based advertising agency and production company. I also continued to work part time in Philadelphia radio, on-air, until 2016.
I am proud to say that during the last twenty plus years of running my ad agency, we have assisted billion-dollar brands grow their business through marketing communications and strategies developed by our company. This included writing, casting, and shooting and editing award winning TV commercials, corporate communication videos, and on-line videos for our clients. I've personally been lucky enough to receive multiple filmmaking awards for my client's video work. Please visit our agency and production company website at CeramiCreative.com
Our first film shoot back in the mid 90’s, was shot on a 16 millimeter film camera. The film had to be shipped to Kodak in New York City for development and then transferred to a digital intermediate (video tape copy) to be edited in our first digital editing system, the AVID Media Composer 9000. Ah, the good old days…not really.
Today, we still shoot plenty of professional video using our Red camera. Obviously, the process is much simpler.
My agency continues to thrive, and it occupies my time during the work week. But what interested me in shooting and editing weddings during the weekends?
A couple of things. First, my wife says I’m not happy unless I’m working. That’s true, but I would amend that by saying I’m not happy unless I’m creating.
Second, the technology of film making (or video making) has gone through a revolution in the last five years. New reasonably priced tools such as small 4K video cameras, new lenses, sound recording equipment, gimbals and drones have given creative film makers the tools that emulate the look and feel of major cinematic films! Now, that same look and feel can be brought to smaller productions, such as weddings and events.
Lastly, the opportunity for me to combine cinematic film making with the high drama and emotion of a wedding is a creative satisfaction that fuels my love for film making. Today’s wedding film, can capture, intimately, the nuances of a couple’s special day and document one of the most important days of their life and what I think sets us apart, the story that led up to the wedding day.
Having been married for a couple of decades, I treasure, more than ever, the video that was shot during my wedding, even as crude as the technology was, back then. I feel sad attending a wedding today when a couple decides to hire a photographer but chooses not to hire a wedding film maker. As a couple begins their journey, hopefully, through a long and wonderful marriage, I can almost guarantee that they wished they could view and hear those precious moments captured only by a wedding film.
